Talking to the Other Side: A History of Modern Spiritualism and Mediumship: A Study of the Religion, Science, Philosophy and Mediums that E

Since its birth in 1848, Spiritualism as a religion, science, and philosophy has experienced great highs and lows. At the center of this purely American-made modern-religious movement are "mediums"-the people who are able to communicate, in some way, with spirit entities that are no longer on the earth plane.Based on three years of on-site investigation, and a plethora of data and research collected on the modern Spiritualist movement in America, Talking to the Other Side focuses upon the ethno-religious aspects of the religion, mediumship, and the mediums themselves. The first four chapters offer an expansive review of the history of religion in America, mediumship, and the Spiritualist movement. Chapters 5?7 comprise the research and data that were compiled and analyzed based on fieldwork analysis, a comprehensive questionnaire, personal interviews, and published literature on the topic of Spiritualism and mediumship.According to Spiritualist mediums, "people don't die, bodies do." Talking to the Other Side offers a contemporary look into the lives and backgrounds of the mediums who bridge this world and the Spirit world, connecting those who have passed over with those they left behind.

Readable, informative history and Precepts of Spiritualism
By L. Kamada
I found this book to be a very readable and informative history of the Spiritualist Movement in USA, something of which I had previously known almost nothing about. I particularly recommend this book for those wanting to know of the history of made-in-America religions, not only Spiritualism. As well, I also recommend this book for those wanting to know more about the precepts of Spiritualism itself, an extremely unique and interesting religion, situated in science that offers an alternative to institutionalized religions which often do not allow for a personal approach to spiritual development, as Spiritualism does. Based on Dr. Leonard's Ph.D. thesis, the last few chapters answer his research questions gleaned from a questionnaire survey which was qualitatively analyzed in the voices of his participants, the Spiritualists themselves. Along with extensive appendices and various notes throughout, this book is a unique contribution to an area that has not yet been well documented. Dr. Leonard's insider view as a novice Spiritualist himself, to which he converts during the span of the survey, makes this book all the more attractive.

Fascinating! Amazing! Great personal stories from Mediums!
By Patti J. Stice
With all the increasing attention on the supernatural, mediums, occult, and metaphysical possibilities, Dr. Leonard's "Talking to the Other Side" presents the extraordinary history of Spiritualism as a religion in America. He explores the early beginnings of the Fox sisters listening to unbelievable rappings, to the spread of seances across America, and to the establishment of Spiritualism as a religion, science, and philosophy in 1848. In addition to the historical text, Dr. Leonard had rare access in meeting with practicing Spiritualist mediums during years of field research. Several chapters reveal stimulating and mind expanding conversations from personal interviews with Spiritualist mediums. If you are searching for more knowledge about mediumship and spiritual growth, this is the book for you. Dr. Leonard's book is not only educational but enriches the reader by exploring the extraordinary and illuminating stories from Spiritualist mediums who continue to talk to the Spirit world. This book is a must read!

Dr. Leonard's book is excellent!
By Franklin S. Takei
Dr. Leonard's book is excellent! It constitutes a sorely needed updating of the religion of Spiritualism as practiced in the United States. The book is in two parts: a) a brief history of religion in the United States with special attention to the origins and development of Spiritualism; b) discussion of the research instrument which was used to attain relevant information about the practice of mediumship from certified mediums who reside and/or practice in three Spiritualist camps and a careful appraisal of the information gained from this instrument.
While the history of Spiritualism and the practice of mediumship have been discussed in monographs, books and television documentaries, Dr. Leonard's book is arguably the first of its kind to present information and assessments about mediums as such....their backgrounds, personality profiles, steps taken to become certified as mediums, and the kinds of mediumship that are practiced. Further, the appendix includes interviews conducted with some of the mediums and relevant information about Spiritualist associations.
I am a resident (more than 20 years) of one of the Spiritualist camps (Lily Dale) in which mediumship is practiced. Dr. Leonard's book confirms the impressions that I have gained over these years about mediums and mediumship.

From Publishers Weekly
Murder stalks a love triangle in New York City in Starr's low-key thriller, his most crowd-pleasing novel to date. Katie Porter believes her encounter at the health club with Peter Wells is total chance. What she doesn't know is that Peter once dated her sister back in her hometown and has elaborate plans to marry her, after waiting a couple of weeks for the perfect romantic moment to pop the question. And she doesn't have a clue that her current boyfriend, Andy Barnett, is ready to dump her. A twenty-three-year-old single guy in Manhattan, Andy is a male animal on the prowl, checking out all the action: The clothes were loose, but it looked like she had a nice body—thin anyway, which was all that really mattered. Starr (Lights Out) is a master at capturing the minute-by-minute lives of vacuous yuppies, and he absolutely shines with these characters. When Peter decides he needs to eliminate the competition, this Looking for Ms. Goodbar suddenly becomes a very funny, dark social satire. (Aug.)

From Booklist
Starr writes dark comedies about dim bulbs. Sometimes it works--Lights Out (2006) featured an entertaining premise and a frantic pace--and sometimes it doesn't, which is the case here. Set in the party-hearty world of twentysomething Manhattanites, The Follower offers a tepid premise (a stalker sets his sights on a shallow young woman[...]), formulaic satire (the characters say like a lot and shop at Banana Republic), and uninspired delivery (the characters use cliches, and so does the author). It's a thriller with no thrills. If we cared about the characters, it might be suspenseful, but one suspects that even Starr doesn't care about them. It's fine if they're shallow jerks, but couldn't they be interesting shallow jerks? A better writer would search for sparks of humanity even in psychos and lame-o's. Many consider Starr a rising star in the genre, and his name on a spine will draw fans. But he often coasts, and here he has taken it out of gear entirely: this trip to the singles bars will leave readers desperate for a ride home. Keir Graff

Love Jason Starr--have read everything he's written. The Follower's shallow tone bothers some, but it's a spot-on portrayal of the world he's writing about and its inhabitants.

Defies convention from the git-go
By Bookreporter
No one is writing books quite like Jason Starr. His latest novel is labeled a "thriller," and yes, it is most definitely that --- I was actually afraid to read the last several pages, for what they might reveal --- but like his other books, Starr's narratives handily slice in and out of life, shattering character and plot stereotypes to an unsettling degree. The reader never knows what is going to happen or how it will happen. Starr, however, does quite a bit more in THE FOLLOWER than turn an expectation or two upside down.

The book defies convention from the git-go. Starr begins things slowly, almost agonizingly so, setting up his main characters and a few secondary ones with a minimum of flash before he begins to tantalizingly disrobe their psyches. The main story ebbs and flows around Katie Porter and Peter Wells. Porter is from a small New England town, an administrative assistant fresh out of college living in Manhattan and working for a financial PR agency. But her life, as she is rapidly discovering, is neither as exciting nor as fulfilling as she thought it would be. Wells is a few years older than Porter, from the same small town, and also living in Manhattan. He is in love with her and has their life together planned out to the last nuance; he sets up a chance meeting, starts finding reasons to run into her, and slowly begins interjecting himself into her life.

No one is going to stop Porter's Peter Pan boyfriend (least of all Andy Barnett), who seems as bent on seducing everyone who moves (provided they meet his careful and exacting standards) as he is on convincing Porter to offer him the marble peach. Porter, however, is not exactly blameless. Indeed, it would be tough to pick a winner in a three-way bet among Porter, Barnett and a bassinet to pick the shallowest of the group. Porter's and Barnett's friends, with the exception of Porter's roommate, aren't much better. Wells, on the other hand, is by no means shallow. He is actually quite deep, a yawning, dangerous, dark chasm that is patiently waiting to swallow Porter and anyone who gets in his way.

Starr would have created a riveting tale just sticking to his basic plot, letting it unfurl and displaying what happens. But he takes different vignettes in THE FOLLOWER and examines each from the perspective of the participants, by showing how different each person's version of the same truth becomes. This method is particularly effective after the first extended outing between Wells and Porter; as the reader learns of the events first through Wells's eyes and then through Porter's, it becomes more than obvious that the book will either have a horrifying ending or result in horrors without end. Or both.

In the space of just a few novels, Starr seems on the verge of creating a genre unto himself, and THE FOLLOWER is one more, very important reason why.

A quick and entertaining read
By Brenda Janowitz
As a chick lit author, I love any book that begins with a Jane Austen quote. Especially one that's cleverly used, as in the opener to Jason Starr's psychological thriller, THE FOLLOWER.

THE FOLLOWER is a dark tale about Katie Porter, and the man who stalks her, Peter Wells. Just one warning: Parents--you may never let your children move into their own apartment in Manhattan after you read this!

Starr does an excellent job of portraying single life amongst the 20-somethings living on the Upper East Side of Manhattan--and then skewering it. I loved the irony of how Katie's creepy stalker, Peter, actually has many of the things that Katie would want in a man--the expensive co-op apartment, the big bank account, and the subtle good looks. Starr is making a powerful statement about single life in New York City, what we think we want, and what we deserve to get.

I was highly entertained by this book, and you will be, too. It was the first Jason Starr novel that I've ever read, and I will be back to read more.

The Crisis Of Global Capitalism: Open Society Endangered, by George Soros

The global economy, on which the world now depends more than ever, is in crisis. The Russian economy has collapsed, leading to punishing inflation and economic hardship. Scores of Japanese banks are in ruin while the Japanese government muddles along, the nation falling deeper and deeper into recession. The once-booming economies of Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia have imploded. Brazil and the rest of Latin America has begun to edge toward the precipice, and even in Europe and America the markets lurch violently, wiping out gains with each passing week.

No one is better positioned to explain the current global financial crisis than George Soros, the man Morgan Stanley head Barton Biggs calls "the finest analyst of the world in our time." In The Crisis of Global Capitalism, Soros, chairman of Soros Fund Management (whose Quantum Fund is considered to have been the best performing investment fund in the world over the past thirty years), dissects the current crisis and economic theory in general, revealing how theoretical assumptions have combined with human behavior to lead to today's mess. He shows how unquestioning faith in market forces blinds us to crucial instabilities, and how those instabilities have chain-reacted to cause the current crisis—a crisis that has the potential to get much, much worse. Offering brilliant solutions to the global meltdown, based on years of Soros's own experience as a financier and philanthropist, this is essential reading for anyone involved with the new economy—that is, all of us.

The hobo Philosopher
By Richard E. Noble
This is my first exploration into the mind and thinking of George Soros. This book was not difficult to read. Mr. Soros is not a deceptive writer.
It seems that Mr. Soros is one of the richest men in the world. He made his money in the international financial marketplace. Today he is out of the speculation business and characterizes himself as a philanthropist.
His educational background is in economics and philosophy. Being familiar reading philosophers, I feel safe in saying that he writes, thinks and explains himself like a philosopher.
Many critics consider Mr. Soros a liberal or an apologist for the "socialist, communist" left. I think not. Mr. Soros is first a Capitalist. He does not believe in the "equilibrium" notion which proposes a self-adjusting world.
As I see it, George Soros is a capitalist to the core. Like John Maynard Keynes before him, I understand him to be a pragmatic capitalist personally engaged in the task of expanding and attempting to move capitalism along positively to a globally successful economic system. He accepts that capitalism has gone global. He doesn't resist globalism but realizes that without restraints and rules and regulations it has a possibility of collapsing upon itself. Soros's solutions are in my opinion the philosophical convolutions of a capitalist investment broker. Sort of a Meditations by Marcus Aurelius - but in international financial investment. It was a real struggle for Marcus Aurelius to maintain his philosophical inclinations and at the same time, authoritatively and often ruthlessly, rule the Roman Empire. It is equally difficult for George Soros to balance his philosophical and moral character with his necessary ruthless and amoral behavior in the gruesome world of international finance. But like Marcus, George gives it an honorable attempt. Many speculative amoral capitalist should be going to prison not to the Riviera. In fact Mr. Soros may be one of them. If he doesn't belong inside a prison, he could certainly be doing some community service. Actually, that is probably exactly what he is attempting with his philanthropic endeavors - as was the case with Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, Henry Ford, and many other of our past unscrupulous economic giants.

Soros is right, the economists are dead wrong
By Professor Joseph L. McCauley
The ideas in this book are based on Soros' experience as successful speculator and market observer, and are described further in "The Alchemy of Finance". One basic idea is that financial markets are inherently unstable, and deregulation makes them even more unstable. Second, but related, there are social needs that cannot be met by `market solutions'. This is the opposite of what's taught in standard economics texts, where the Pareto Optimum is presented as if it would describe real markets (but empirical evidence indicates strongly that it does not). Recent empirical research shows that Soros is right: financial markets are neither stable nor show any tendency toward either dynamic or statistical equilibrium. According to Soros, imposing `market discipline' means imposing market instability, and he is right, empirically seen.

Soros presents his argument in the interest of preserving the global capitalist system, as opposed to any desire to destroy it. Rightwing pundits, blinded by free market ideology, are unable to read his words objectively. The central point of the book is that "market fundamentalism" (radical free market ideology, or free market extremism) is a greater threat to a free society today than is totalitarianism. The book was written in 1998 before Islamic Fundamentalism in the Mid-East, and Christian Fundamentalism in the US, made their aims fully apparent to the rest of us.

Pointing out that preferences are not stable, which is opposite the notion of time-invariant preferences taught in mathematized neo-classical economic ideology, Soros contrasts two extreme societies: `transactional society', where everything is freely traded and all values are priced in dollars, and a society that believes in `fundamental values', as in fundamentalist religion. His main point is `reflexivity', that in social phenomena what we think about affects what happens, on the one hand because we can make wishes come true by acting on them (a problem of self-reference), and on the other because we can never foresee all the consequences of our actions (incomplete foresight). This is not the case in natural science, where thinking about the orbit of a planet cannot affect that orbit (unless we would then fire a large enough nuclear rocket to shift the planet's orbit). Soros as trader is always sceptical, because he knows that there is always a gap between reality and his present perception of reality, that no one can be in possession of the absolute truth. This awareness emphasizes the danger posed by `Fundamentalism' or `Fundamental Values' of all brands, if one labors under the dangerous illusion that those values represent inviolable truth. Likewise, transactional society (money-based society) is unstable, chaotic, for lack of any values other than `price'. His idea of an `Open Society' lies somewhere in the no man's land between those two extremes, and is based on the recognition of human fallibility, on the fact that no one is ever in possession of the ultimate socio-economic-religious truth, nor can anyone ever be.

Soros was strongly influenced by Popper in his early years and gives much weight to falsifiability, which he thinks is limited in the social sphere to finding out eventually that one or more of one's perceptions is wrong, and why. But he is optimistic that, via scepticism, we can iterate toward (non time-invariant!) social truth, even if we cannot ultimately reach it. E.g., a financial hypothesis doesn't have to be true to be profitable, but if one doesn't realize that the hypothesis is flawed and get out of the market fast enough, then one will get burned. Soros calls such gaps between perception and reality `fertile fallacies'. Osborne-Black-Scholes was a fertile fallacy until 1987, after which point options traders said it was wrong. The market model that is correct in our era is another fertile fallacy. The assumption from 1990-2000 that the market would only go up was a fertile fallacy, a much more profitable one than a mathematical market model! Believers in 'fundamental market values' held onto an impotent fallacy in the era 1990-2000.

Soros says that the events in which we participate do not constitute some sort of independent criterion (as in hard science) by which the truth or falsehood of our thoughts can be judged. By this, he means that there is always a gap between reality and how we perceive reality. However, he is not entirely right that Popperian falsification is beyond the pale: if `reflexivity' is correct, and if we could mathematize that idea as an agent-based trading model, then we could test reflexivity on historic finance statistics. Why do that? Because if reflexivity is correct, then it must have produced those statistics. This mightn't bring us a whit closer to predicting the future, and surely would not, but at least Soros' idea can perhaps be tested, it may be falsifiable after all.

Now for the many mistakes in the text. Neither chaos theory nor 'evolutionary models' have anything to do with exploring phenomena that cannot be determined by timeless laws (pg. 12). Newtonian mechanics is full of chaotic examples, and `evolutionary models' (`complex adaptable systems') have so far explained absolutely nothing about biology. Logical positivism and Deconstruction/Postmodernism are certainly not the only worldviews available! Wigner (1967) has explained implicitly the difference between the hard and social sciences in his essays "Symmetries and Reflections". A model needn't be a timelessly-valid law of motion (like Newton's Laws) to be falsifiable (pg.30), it need (like the Gunaratne-McCauley finance market model) only be empirically correct over a large enough time interval. Our model is correct over the last fifteen years, e.g., and is falsifiable. The following errors occur on pg. 36: pendula are not `ergodic', movement toward `equilibrium' occurs in no known real market, Osborne (1973) gave the correct definition of observable demand-supply curves, they are noninvertible step-functions where, e.g., x=D(p,t) exists but p=f(x,t) never exists. Stock market limit orders provide the canonical example. Pg. 39: equilibrium is not a special case of reflexivity, equilibrium does not exist in markets, which are both far from equilibrium and complex. Sunspot experiments did not establish General Relativity. On pg. 42 Soros disparages Black-Scholes, which was a good zeroth order model and was falsifiable, and gives credence the economists' impotent notion of `equilibrium', which is not only falsified by real markets but was never even approximately true of any known market. Soros is not close to finance theorists (no disadvantage in making money in the markt) but is apparently close to two or more NYU economists, and is still too much influenced by the `equilibrium' ideas taught in standard economics textbooks. "Dynamic disequilibrium" should read simply "disequilibrium", there being no such thing as `static disequilibrium' (another term that he misuses elsewhere). A good dose of Newtonian physics, or at least a basic course in dynamical systems earlier at the London School of Economics might have prevented such misconceptions. "Value" is discussed on pg. 43, but we have shown in our recent work that there is no time-invariant definition of the (fundamental) `value' of an asset, there is only the most probable or `consensus' value attributed by most traders at a given time. Consensus value fluctuates much more wildly than the market statistics that are distributed about it. On pg. 49 Soros gives a wrong definition of equilibrium, analogous to one that Black apparently had in mind in his paper "Noise". Pg. 55, market statistics have nothing to do with fractals, but are described to zeroth order by nonGaussian (nonlognornal, non everything you've read if you haven't yet read Gunaratne and McCauley) `Brownian motion' still with Hurst exponent H=1/2, in agreement with the efficient market hypothesis, which simply means that the market is hard to beat (the market shows no systematic patterns, to zeroth order). Pg. 59, no known market phenomena are susceptible to `equilibrium analysis'. Pg. 62, `static disequilibrium' should be replaced by `closed system with small fluctuations', maybe equilibrium, maybe far from equilibrium. Indeed, the only known way to reach statistical equilibrium in an otherwise free market is to impose upper and lower price controls (see "Dynamics of Markets" by JMC). By 'dynamic disequilibrium' Soros sometimes means far from equilibrium markets with volatility and fat tails (normal liquid markets), and sometimes he means market crashes. Market bubbles fall into the former category of a normal liquid market. On pg.66, another wrong definition of `equilibrium' is given. There, Soros only means the gap between appearances and (the unknown) reality of the market that will make itself better known in the future. Pg. 67, the claim about near and far from equilibrium for water is physically completely wrong. Pg. 70, there is no evidence that 'open society represents near equilibrium conditions', we certainly know nothing of the sort. On pg. 90 is discussed valuing everything via money, and Spengler's "Untergang des Abendlandes" could (and should) have been acknowledged.

In general, I'm in strong agreement with this book and recommend it very highly, not only to laymen but especially to economists and econophysicists, many (if not most) of whom have bad misconceptions about real markets. In particular, there is the myth of stationary markets, or asymptotic `market equilibrium' in the face of nothing but market instability. Market instability is shown by our model, which is inferred from hard, empirical data. I would like to have been invited to correct the wrong definitions and misleading terminology in the book before it went into print, but apparently that task was given to Economics Professor Roman Frydman at NYU. Maybe next time around.

An ingenious overview of the world economy and Geopolitics as on 1998.
By Fyers Securities
In this book, George Soros, explains his theory of reflexivity in length and uses the financial markets as a field of example to demonstrate its workings. The first part of the book is dedicated to the theoretic explanation of his theory which is for the most part, very dry and heavy.

The second part is where the fun begins. He starts by analysing the basic framework of the world markets. He explains how the capitalist system can be compared to a globalized empire unmatched by any predecessors. Unlike in the past, this empire does not trample upon the sovereignty of the member nations but yet exercises power and control in other ways such as influence over people’s lives as opposed to geographical expansion. The empire analogy befits the United States and other major economic powers which have allied interests like Germany and Japan. These countries or the centre of power are the givers of capital and the nations who are receiving capital are the peripheries. The periphery nations are often at the mercy of those who are at the centre. He explains the sequence of events that occurred that caused the market in Eurodollars to develop in the 1970s, and boom/busts in South America, South Asia, Japan and Russia.

The content is of very high value to those who want to deepen their understanding of how the financial world functions at the very top. The book is filled with awe inspiring analysis and predictions of the markets and economies. This material is for serious market and history buffs only who apply their minds using the top-down approach.

The discovery of giant humans in North America is the result of pouring through over 10,000 State, County and Township histories at one of the largest genealogical libraries in America. Hundreds of additional accounts were also found within newspaper archives.     888 historical accounts of giant human skeletons discovered in North America is the largest collection in print. The Encyclopedia of Ancient Giants in North America chronicles two distinct waves of giant humans migrating to North America. As early as 7,000 B.C., strange people arrived on the North American shores of gigantic size with Neanderthal looking skulls. Their spread across the American landscape is documented not only by their massive skeletons but by an identical material culture that was found buried with their remains. Double rows of teeth and skulls with protruding horns make them one of America's most intriguing mysteries. At the advent of the Bronze Age another migration of giant humans found their way to North America. A persistent legend exists with Native Americans of a people who came to trade and mine the copper from the Upper Great Lakes. They left an indelible mark upon the landscape of the Ohio Valley with their large burial mounds and earthworks aligned to solar, lunar and stellar events. The measurements of these works reveal that they were constructed with the knowledge of advanced mathematics and geometry.

Review
Zimmerman's book will plunge the reader into the world of the arcane, filled with tall tails--no pun intended--of giants who once roamed the land where shopping malls now stand. His new book, The Encyclopedia of Giants is a welcome addition to his growing body of work and I predict may be the go-to book for researchers and those of us who are interested in the subject matter.
Zimmermanis a champion of the truth and his indefatigable quest for it knows no bounds. He's truly On the trail of the Nephilim!

This is a 515 page book loaded with information on Giants in the United States. I appreciated how the author labeled the states under the headings in the table of contents. This makes it much easier to locate information on certain areas. I have also purchased his other two books and find them all filled with a wealth of information.

Excellent approach to this subject.
By Ron Spolar
Very well done. Does not try to make speculations and theories from conjecture (like Ancient Aliens on History Channel). Primarily quotes newspaper articles and scientific journals or books. Even groups news from each state in USA on this subject. Allows reader to form their own opinion based on information available over time. Creative approach.

Loads of material data; could be edited better, though
By A Customer
First, the good part about this book: it covers the basic aspects of materials science: physical and mechanical metallurgy, polymers, and semiconductors, to name a few. It goes beyond this with chapters on using materials in real design (for example, materials used in the Space Shuttle and in a commercial jet) and complements this with tables of material properties of metals, alloys and plastics. There're gobs of data tables. I frequently use this book when I need to get material property data such as yield strength of a particular copper alloy or the maximum-use temperature of a clay-filled phenolic resin. It's very handy in that regard.
Now for what I disliked: The level of coverage is very elementary, and the example problems reflect this. They're overly simplistic, often of the plug-and-chug variety. Because of this I got the impression several times that Dr. Mangonon really didn't know what he was writing about in a few areas. There are also typos and mistakes sprinkled throughout. For example, I made a decision in my work based on data I got from this book. The data turned out to be a typo, and I had to do some damage control. I could forgive a few typos; I mean, we're only human. But this book has more than what I'd consider to be an average amount.
The typography is inconsistent also. In some equations variables are italicized, but in many others they're not. This might seem to be a minor point, but this inconsistency becomes obvious the more you read this book. The effect to me was that the book didn't fully have that 100% professional layout look. Finally, the index is just horrible. It's very, very skimpy. If you're trying to find something using the index, God be with you, because you're going to need it.

Fun Hit Man Novel
By James N Simpson
Kill Your Boss is certainly a title that instantly catches your eye when looking for something to read on a shelf. Who hasn't worked somewhere, sometime in your life and fantasised about doing that? But this isn't a bully victim has had enough of an evil boss, frustrated with the system that doesn't work and decides to stop the torment by doing away with their boss. What Kill Your Boss instead is an instruction manual by a hit man to new trainees about how to cope on the job and deal with the organisation that has recruited them from juvenile prisons to go undercover as interns in major corporations where they can get close enough to kill a target and make it look like an accident, or serial killer, mob hit, whatever is required. Since John is approaching his mid twenties, his age at passing for someone who will work for free and just take whatever is thrown at him in an office is fast approaching being implausible. He knows the organisation will either kill him when he completes his final assignment or let him retire on an isolated beach somewhere. John takes the reader step by step through his final assignment from day one arriving at a law firm as an intern. He also recounts past assignments throughout the story as well as flashbacks to his childhood, including being recruited from his jail cell after he murdered his abusive foster parents. He disputes Hollywood myths of his profession as he tells his tale as well. The book is more of a through the eyes of the narrator style flashback and as it happens style novel than an instruction manual. In fact the instructional manual scenario doesn't entirely make a lot of sense but still being addressed as a hit man trainee is a fun scenario for a reader, at least I thought so.

The story is fairly predictable, you'll work out what is going on before John does. There's sort of two stories in here, the main one involving the final assignment and manual, then a sort of pretty long epilogue. I think the story may have been better off ending when the main story did, mainly as the implausibility factor got higher and higher as the epilogue went on. Kill Your Boss is not a realistic tale at all, like an 80's action film with its fight scenes, which is more fun as it is pointing out how those sorts of heroes are implausible within its story.

But you read a fiction novel to be entertained. This one certainly does that and has the want to keep turning the pages until the end factor, well at least until the untitled epilogue. John is also a very likeable character as well. I'd definitely read a second book by Shane Kuhn if he writes one.

Excellent and original!
By Gizzimomo Wilson
I won a proof copy of the book from a GoodReads FirstReads giveaway and this is the copy that I have read and will be basing the review on but keep in mind that the book may have changed slightly from this copy to the actual release copy. I WILL be buying the final release copy of the book when I can.

The first thing I love about the book is the cover, it's a very striking cover and is such a strong image that fits the book down to a tee. My proof copy had a back cover and the image in yellow but the final release copy is the reverse, yellow cover with a black image, personally I prefer the black cover as it's a very dark book and fits what's within the cover better in my opinion

The second thing I love about this book is everything contained with the fab cover!

The book revolves around John Lagos and John Lagos is a hitman (think James Bond with none of the glitz and with a lot more weaponry), a skilled assassin who works for a company called HR (Human Resources Inc.) who sends assassin's into company under the guise of the lowly intern so they can secretly infiltrate the company (in this case a law firm) to get close to a target within that company. This story is about John Lagos last assignment for HR before he retires at 25 years of age. He is sent into a law firm to take out one of the partners but getting into the company is one thing but getting to his target is a something of a challenge for more reasons than one that I can't go into without giving away spoilers but take it from me nothing seems to go to plan!

Kill Your Boss is written in such a way that it's like reading an action movie. I know some people haven't liked this book for just that reason as normally a book written as 'a movie' doesn't work but in my opinion in this case I think it does but I can't really explain why that is, it just works. It's written as a memoir where John will tell you (you as in future interns) all about his final assignment, he'll go through the rules of being an assassins and try to show you where he went wrong so you won't, the trouble is that he consistently breaks his own rules himself! You also get some chapters that aren't written from John's point of view and are in the form of FBI conversation reports. They read almost like a screenplay, I didn't quite understand the point of them but they do break up the story nicely and allow you to take a breath before diving back into the story.

Shane Kuhn's writing style is very easy to read and he has written this book in such a way that it just flows from page to page without you having to stop and take a moment to consider what has just happened like you do with some overly described books. I'm not saying that this book isn't descriptive as it really is (especially a certain scene with a very dead and badly beaten body over which I apparently made some odd noises that woke my husband up while I was reading it late one night) but the descriptive work is easy to read and understand without having to think about it. The book has some very violent scenes but these are tempered with moments of sheer humour too, it can be very tongue in cheek and doesn't take itself too seriously which is good as I don't think it would work at all if it did.

The characters are fantastic especially the lead John, a young man who has been an assassin for a long time after HR found him as child who'd had a very harsh and hard childhood to that point. As someone who has been through a lot of horrible events in his life being an assassin is all he really knows and that in itself has warped him to a degree. He most definitely is not your average hero but that adds to the appeal. I really got to understand John throughout the book (and through series of flashbacks showing various points in his life up to the current events in question) and I found myself liking him a whole lot. Granted, he's not a straight cut guy, he likes a drink, does drugs (and likes drugging other people), gets into fights for living and murders people for money.

As for John's relationships with other characters within the book, it's the intense relationship he has with his 'handler' within HR which is probably the best relationship in the book. Bob from HR is everything that John doesn't want to become and he's not afraid to let it show, John absolutely HATES him and so did I, I so wanted Bob to get what he really deserved. There were times I would have liked to thump the guy myself! John's relationship with co-worker from the law firm Alice is quite sweet despite the events surrounding them, it also get pretty saucy at times too and Alice's own secret, while not entirely a surprise, only adds to the immense pickle that John find himself in while trying to figure out who his target actually is. The love story side of things is a bit predictable but it's never going to change John's character despite the fact that the book tries to say that John is changed by his 'love' for Alice. If he really did love her he wouldn't be drugging her every five minutes and would be treating as the love of his life instead of an easy disposed of object (which he does, a lot!). It all stretches believability a bit but the romance is needed to soften John's harsh character, to make him seem more human. You can tell that John doesn't really understand how to be in a relationship which is proven by the way he treats Alice and how he tries to keep her at arms length. To be honest if I had been in Alice's position I'd have told John to get lost but sometimes, as many of us ladies know, you just can't seem to stay away from that bad boy no matter how badly they treat you, I know as I've been there and done that.

All in all, Kill Your Boss is a very interesting read, it's different to anything I've read before and I really liked the originality of it all. It's super easy to get into and will hold your attention right the way through the book. It made me gasp and ooooooo on many occasion but I will say if you don't like reading about violence then this may not be the title for you and I will also point out that there is swearing throughout the book. I would say that if you are a fan of TV shows like Dexter then this will be the book for you! I am super excited that there is going to be a sequel and am very interested to find out where John can go after the rather spectacular finale to the book, very interested indeed.

Kill your boss
By Clare O'Beara
My edition has the title Kill Your Boss but it's also called The Intern's Handbook.
The concept is a good one - that young trained assassins are pretending to be interns (young unpaid trainees) in major firms in order to get close enough to a major business figure to kill that person and make it look like an enemy - mafia boss etc. - killed them. The narrator John is twenty-five, on his last case, when he starts the story.

The book has to be taken as a comedy or satire, with a higher body count than just about any thriller you've read, gadgets, weapons and Kevlar galore. I don't know how legal it would be in Europe for someone to do unpaid work for six months, as it just seems like exploitation and especially in a high-rent city like New York people would find it hard to live. The bosses are all apparent sociopaths - maybe that's how they get to be on top of a business - and of course the boss of the assassin firm, HR Inc, is as bad as any.

John sets out some rules such as "be forgettable" and manages to break them, untypically falling for a girl at the same firm. Obvious lying and double-dealing is going on all around him and he gives us a story of his upbringing laced with pathos and unpleasantness. Not for the squeamish, but I am sure we can all learn something from the tale, even if it's just to be kind to new staff.

The Diloggun: The Orishas, Proverbs, Sacrifices, and Prohibitions of Cuban Santeria, by Ócha'ni Lele, Ocha'ni Lele

The first book on Santería’s holiest divination system to thoroughly explore each family of odu and how their actions and reactions affect the spiritual development of the client.

• Includes the major considerations for sacrifice, providing the diviner with ways to placate and supplicate the Afro-Cuban deities known as orishas.

• Demonstrates how to properly end a reading so that negative vibrations are fully removed from the diviner's home.

• Provides a thoroughly detailed description of each of the 12 families of odu that exist in the diloggun--from Okana through Ejila Shebora.

The diloggun is more than a tool of divination. It is a powerful transformational process, and the forces that are set in motion when it is cast determine the future evolution of the adherent. The Diloggun is the first book to explore this Afro-Cuban oracle from the perspective of diaspora orisha worship. It is also the first book to explore the lore surrounding this mysterious oracle, which is the living Bible of one of the world's fastest growing faiths.

The twelve families of odu that are available to the diviner include 192 omo odu, the children of the odu, and each of these patterns or letters has its own proverbs, meanings, prohibitions, and sacrifices. Ócha'ni Lele provides the secret but essential information that the adept diviner needs to know to ensure that every element affecting a client's spiritual development is taken into consideration during a reading. His book is also the first to detail how to properly end a session so that negative vibrations are absorbed by the orishas and fully removed from the diviner's home. For those seeking the wisdom of ancient Africa, The Diloggun is an indispensable guide to the mysteries of the orishas.

Review
"Stuart Meyers is to be congratulated and commended for producing this strikingly beautiful volume." (Edward Batchelor, Jr., Yale University, November 2003)

"Every nook, cranny and crack of Santeria is covered, explained, demonstrated and laid out in clear, simple terms." (Vision Magazine, April 2004)

"The Diloggun is an indispensable guide to the mysteries of the orshas." (SirReadaLot.org, March 2004)

“In this new book Ócha’ni Lele has brought together information never before published for the education of serious students of divination, and for use by initiated practitioners of African traditional religions, especially those who follow La Regla de Ocha. In doing so, he has more than justified his own claim that ‘one cannot overstate the academic and scholastic value’ of this work.” (Edward Batchelor, Jr., Fellow in Religion,Yale University)

"The sheer amount of information contained within the covers of this book is astounding. I have never seen a book which explains this type of divination in anything like this amount of detail." (Mike Gleason, Witchgrove.org, April 2007)

"The first important work to document the art of Diloggun reading thoroughly in English." (Eric Lerner, Oya N'Soro: Oya Speaks!, October 2003, Vol. 1 Edition 2)

“The effort that went into writing this book is only exceeded by the expertise required to write it. Ócha'ni Lele has produced a highly significant addition to the body of lore on Lucumé/Santería that is valuable for its comprehensive insights and its value to prosperity in the religious tradition. Kudos to the editors and publisher of this book for accepting such a massive undertaking. Well done!” (Elizabeth Hazel, FacingNort.net, September 2011)

The diloggún, the cowrie-shell oracle of Cuban Santería, is more than a tool of divination. It is the doorway to a powerful transformational process, and the forces that are set in motion when it is cast determine the future evolution of the adherent. The Diloggún explores this mysterious Afro-Cuban oracle from the perspective of diaspora orisha worship and includes a thorough exploration of the body of lore surrounding the oracle, which is the living Bible of one of the world’s fastest growing faiths.

Ócha’ni Lele provides a detailed description of each of the twelve families of odu that exist in the diloggún--from Okana through Ejila Shebora. Within these twelve families are 192 omo odu, the children of the odu, and each of these patterns or letters has its own lore, proverbs, meanings, prohibitions, and sacrifices, which Lele details as well. He is the first to provide the hitherto secret, but essential, information that the adept diviner needs to have in order to ensure that every element affecting a client’s spiritual development is taken into account during a reading. He includes all the major indications for sacrifice, ebó, providing the diviner with numerous ways to placate and supplicate the Afro-Cuban deities known as orishas. His book is also the first to detail how to properly end a session so that negative vibrations are absorbed by the orishas and fully removed from the diviner’s home. For those seeking the wisdom of ancient Africa, The Diloggún is an indispensable guide to the mysteries of the orishas.

The most studied work in this religion
By Stephen Garcia
There are quite a few books available about this religion in both Spanish and English, however, I have never seen a book more referenced, more studied, or more jealously guarded than this.

It is a huge tome, very comprehensive in its material, yet the author humbly states that it is still little more than a beginner's treatise on the subject, and has promised future volumes to continue his work (a promise I might note has not yet been fulfilled, to my dismay).

Many elders in this religion try to discredit this author: his use of a pen name (for privacy reasons -- and privacy is something no one in this religion wants to give him), and his actual publication of what has been, to date, an oral teaching has created much stir among the elders.

Yet this book is much needed. Armed with the material in this tome, the beginner to this faith has a yardstick, a standard, by which to measure the diviners to who he goes for spiritual help. The novice santero has a tool that will teach him much more than just the art of divination with diloggun: He has a tool that will teach him the basics of history, and the art of prayer (mojuba) that is integral to all levels of this religion.

And even the seasoned diviner has a tool to facilitate his own studies.

I myself have been a welcome visitor to many houses of santo. I have visited oriates in their homes in Miami, New York, and Las Angeles. I have even been in the houses of several babalawos. I must say, to the author's credit, each oriate or babalawo that I visit has this book on his bookshelf. And when I ask if I can see the book, each time the priest tells me, "No, it is too full of secrets. It is not for your eyes."

Ashe to Ochani Lele! He has written a book that will survive the ages. He has also given us all a much needed tool to learn more about our faith and our spiritual practices.

Please note: I do not feel this book is appropriate for aleyos. It is too in depth, and gives too much secret knowledge. But knowing that will probably make them all the more excited to purchase the book and have the knowledge therein for theirselves.

Simply the Best!
By A Customer
As a priest of this religion, I could not ask for a better print reference than this book. It is excellent! Detailed, full of outstanding explanations of the oddus and their composites, there is no better text on Santeria divination than this! The author must be commended for such a work of brillance! It is truely inspired by the orishas themselves! Maferefun Chango! Maferefun Oya! Maferefun Obatala! Alafia my abure!

Really, a very good book
By Marcos A. M. Oliveira
I didn't write a review before because I found a lot of here then it looks like me unnecessary. However I read a lot of unfair reviews and I would like to left here my opinion.

In fact, lele is a very polemic person in lukumi, I guess. I already heard a lot of things about him and also see some discussion in lukumi foruns where he is. Some people say he got the information about this book in a incorrect way, but, sincerely for who want to read the book it doesn't matter.

I have a lot of Ifa and erindilogun books and nobody write deep about nothing. The Cubans are the people who are concerned do write more extensively about anything and the africans only publish incomplete Ifa poetry. Therefore, this book here is one the best source available to be acquired. Ones can say it is not complete. Yes can be, but considering every one think he self is better than the other everything is incomplete, it is, some will always say something is missing or wrong.

In this case here, I didn't find any relevant error, better, I don't think some one can say there is a error here, because every one has his own method or information.

For my self I already compared this book with Cuba Ifa documents (Dice de Ifa), more than one source and the interpretation is the same. Well here is better written, more extensive, etc.. Some times lele is too much prolix, they write too much for say something. Also there is some signs where the interpretation is not clear, is very vague, but it also happens in Cuban Ifa tratados.

This book's content is so good or so bad like any other Cuban Ifa source. Also, the Yoruba words are so bad like it is spoken in Cuba, because, Cubans don't know to speak or write Yoruba correctly. Therefore this book only reflects how the cubans use yoruba. If you want you can, like me, correct the words after a hard work. Also you use the prays listed if you want, you also can use your own.

The important in my opinion is this book is very extensive and complete. You can use it and also change the procedures to adapt it to your way. Also in terms os erindilogun it doesn't teach how to use the opon and the owo eyo graphical configuration to improve the interpretation, Lele use the wow eyo as an opele, losing a lot of capabilities, but it is a way to use the oracle.

I am using this book for a long time together with others sources, cuban or african, and I can say everything here is useful, from interpretation to ebos.

There is few books in world about erindilogun. This is one of these.
