I got lucky buying this as my first Tai Chi book!

I'll be brief. This is a great introductory book for us Westerners. This is 99% physical, and 1% metaphysical. It contains nothing about Chi/Qi or Qi Gong, and the motions are not from any of the major styles. Rather, the book presents a sort of "beginer's" form called Small Circle form. The book is a methodical and organized introduction to Tai Chi movements. The things you will learn in this book through its fantastic illustrations and explinations will give you the foundation you will need to tackle a class/style. The best part of this book is the way it focuses on posture, breathing, and warming up. Its self paced, but is designed to be done slowly and practiced daily, but thats up to your goals. Worth every dime. Start here before you get too crazy on spending.

Best introductory book I've seen!

Easy to understand illustrations and clear writing make this a good book for beginners and the curious. It includes (but doesn't emphasize) the spiritual/ somatopsychic aspects, so it's good for those exploring the totality of the art, and for the merely curious looking for a low impact exercise. I think Tai Chi could be a great exercise for those with chronic illness or pain, because it targets the postural muscles (which are often lacking in those with prolonged illness or back injury/ surgery).

Marc Stickdorn is a trainer and consultant for service design thinking from Germany. With a background in strategic management and information systems, he supports organisations to build up knowledge in the field of service design and helps them to sustainably integrate service design into their structures. Marc guest lectures at various business and design schools and co-founded smaply, a software company developing web-based solutions to sustainably implement service design in organisations. An enjoyable volume for fans of Edgar Allan Poe's most known poems.

I have loved all kinds of poetry most of my life, with the exception of the so-called modern free verse poetic style. The short poetic forms like haiku are my favorite types of poems; however, I do love many of the old masters of poetry like Edgar Allan Poe. This small Dover Thrift edition of "the Raven and other favorite poems" is excellent. I was familiar with a few of Poe's most famous poems (The Raven, Annabel Lee, and Eldorado) but this is the first time I have read some of his other poems.

The volume contains 41 of his poems. Some of these include the following: Alone, Annabel Lee, The Bells, the City by the Sea, The coliseum, A dream, Dreams, Eldorado, Eulalie-A song, Evening star, For Annie, Happiest Day-the Happiest hour, the haunted palace, Lenore, The Raven, Spirits of the dead and many other poems.

About the Author
IAN L. McHARG was the founder of and is professor emeritus in the Department of Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning at the University of Pennsylvania. Known as the father of ecological planning, his landmark design projects include The Woodlands, Texas, and Amelia Island, Florida. Professor McHarg has received numerous honorary degrees and awards, including The National Medal of Art, presented by President Bush in 1990.

Significant Book for Architects - Though a Little Slow

While it's not the kind of book you want to lounge around the fireplace reading, it is a book that is frequently referred to by architects. It is significant in designing and ecologially friendly building in today's built-up environment. Summary: Not a great book, but a useful resource for architects.

Before GIS There Was McHarg

Ian McHarg's Design with Nature revolutionized landscape planning just at the time when the modern built environment was being recognized for its devastating effects on natural systems. McHarg devised techniques for planners to envision not just the finished product of human development, but its complex interaction with watersheds, wildlife habitat, viewscapes and anything else that could be represented as a layer on a map. Fast forward to today....Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are complex databases that organize information into the "layers" that McHarg proposed. GIS analysis has found its way into urban planning, oil spill response, wildfire management, epidemiology, endangered species management, socio-economic analysis and many other forms of spatial planning and design. Maps that are products of GIS analysis are digital versions of the tissue and mylar overlays of McHarg's vision and technique. This book is essential reading -- not because planners aren't using its ideas (almost universally, with GIS, they are) but because they don't understand GIS's debt to McHarg's pioneering thinking.
