Good for starters
By Bryan Campbell
I used this book to study and pass the Arborist certification exam. I found that reading the book and doing the practice excersises prepared me very well for the test. The book is 352 pages so there is lots of information, however it also covers many topics so it is oftentimes more brief than I would have preferred. I used this guide to help me determine where I might want to specialize in the industry.
The chapters are:
1. Tree Biology
2. Tree Identification
3. Soil Science
4. Water Management
5. Tree Nutrition and Fertilization
6. Tree Selection
7. Installation and Establishment
8. Pruning
9. Tree Support and Lightning Protection
10. Diagnosis and Plant Disorders
11. Plant Health Care
12. Tree Assessment and Risk Management
13. Trees and Construction
14. Urban Forestry
15. Tree Worker Safety
16. Climbing and Working in Trees
I decided to purchase some of the other books that are recommended for further reading. "Arborculture 4th edition" by Harris, Clark, and Matheny is one that I highly recommend. It offers a much more complete view of many of the above mentioned topics.
For those interested in Tree assessment and risk management I found "The Body Language of Trees A Handbook for Failure Analysis" by Claus Mattheck and Helge Breloer to be superb. I can't say enough good things about the quality of the information.
I have been using Michael Dirr's books to help me learn more about specific trees. In particular his "Manual of Woody Landscape Plants" is a vast resource for cultivar specific information. The man knows his trees.

By David Y.
This book likely has the answers to the questions on the Certified Arborist exam. However, you'll need to do your own research if you truly plan to master the knowledge.
